Using Markers
Using the Tracking Bar
The tracking bar is a useful tool for navigating to different areas of a track's waveform.
As shown in the image to the right, you can change the position of the tracking bar by simply clicking the left button of the mouse when viewing the waveform.
The placement of the tracking bar directly relates to the current project position.
You'll notice that when you set the tracking bar at a new position, that exact position is used as the Project Time (visual aid item #32). This allows the user to easily navigate throughout the project by simply using the tracking bar - left clicking on whatever part of the waveform you wish to have audio playback begin at.
Highlighting a Waveform Section
When editing or zooming in on particular sections of audio, the ability to select or highlight sections of the waveform is very helpful. To select a section of audio, click the left mouse button down while the mouse arrow is over the waveform and hold the button down while dragging the mouse. As soon as you start to drag the mouse you'll see a section of the audio become highlighted. When you're done selecting the desired section, release the left mouse button. The section of audio will remain highlighted. You can now zoom in on that section of audio or perform specific editing functions as described in the "Audio Editing Operations" section.
The images above show an example of selecting audio. Notice that in the first image, when the left mouse button is initially pressed the tracking bar is set and the Project Time is set to this position (00:00.979). Also notice that in the second image as the waveform is highlighted the "End Time" and "Total Length" values are updated. Whenever a section of audio is highlighted the "Start Time" value will contain the starting position of the highlighted section, the "End Time" will contain the ending position of the highlighted section and the "Total Length" value will contain the length of the highlighted section. When no section of the waveform is highlighted and only the tracking bar exists the "Start Time" and "End Time" will both contain the position of the tracking bar and the "Total Length" will contain the entire length of the track.
Zooming In/Out of the Waveform
To view and edit very specific parts of the waveform the zoom feature can be used. The zoom in and zoom out buttons are located in the lower righthand corner of the waveform area (visual aid items #40, #41 and #42). After selecting a section of audio, use the "Zoom In" button to magnify the specific section of audio. If you would like to view more of the waveform, click the "Zoom Out" button. To view the entire waveform, click the "Full View" button.
Note that you can also use the scroll wheel of your mouse to zoom in and out. Using "Ctrl +" and "Ctrl -" on the keyboard is also a shortcut to zooming. The zoom feature is very powerful, if you wish, you can zoom down to a single sample - a fraction of a millisecond.
Using Markers
Markers can be very useful when you need to select a very precise section of audio. Each track can have two markers set - a begin marker and an end marker. To set a marker, place the tracking bar where you would like the marker to be placed and then right click on the audio waveform. This will bring up a popup menu as shown in the image to the right. Here you can choose to set a begin marker and an end marker.
After a begin or end marker has been set, it will always appear when the track waveform is displayed. To erase begin or end markers simply select one of the "Erase" options from the popup menu shown in the image to the right.
If you would like to type in the exact marker position, select "Input Marker Times" from the popup menu. A dialog box will appear allowing you to manually enter marker times. Once your marker or markers are set you can use them to perform editing on the audio section within the markers or perform punch in / punch out recording.
