This section describes the more advanced aspects of recording audio with the Acoustic Labs Multitrack Recorder. For the basics of recording, please see Section 3: Recording New Audio. This section discusses using the input monitor feature, performing punch in/out recording and explains any possible disk space concerns the user should have when recording.

    Monitoring Audio Input

Multitrack Recorder Monitor Input Any audio input device connected to your PC can be monitored by simply clicking the "Monitor Input" button located on the lower toolbar (visual aid item #38). Doing so will display the Monitor Input dialog box as shown to the right. The output level of the device connected will be displayed here. When you're finished monitoring input simply press the "Close" button. Note that you can also monitor audio input before recording. After arming a track and pressing the record button (visual aid item #37) the record dialog box will appear which has its own monitor for input (visual aid item #1). When the record dialog box displays it will immediately start monitoring the current input and will continue to monitor input as you start recording.

    Punch In/out Recording

Often when creating multitrack recording projects you will want the ability to re-record a small and very precise part of a track leaving the remainder of the track unchanged. Punch In / Punch Out Recording allows you to do this. First, use markers to select the region you wish to re-record. Setting begin/end markers is explained in full in Section 6: Using Markers. After you've set begin/end markers for the area you wish to punch in/out of, "Arm" the track and open the recording dialog box by clicking the "Rec" button (visual aid item #37). If you're unsure what is meant by "Arming a Track" or if you're unfamiliar with the recording process please review Section 3: Recording New Audio. Once the recording dialog box has appeared, select the "Use markers for punch in/out times" checkbox (visual aid item #8). Also, just below this checkbox, you'll notice that the marker times that you've set are displayed (visual aid item #9 and #10). Press the "Start" button (visual aid item #5) to start recording. Once you're finished recording press 'Stop'. The newly recorded audio will be processed, only affecting the area within the markers.

Depending on your personal preferences you may wish to hear the existing track playback as you perform punch in/out recording. This can be accomplished by selecting "Listen to target track as you punch in/out record" (visual aid item #11). If this checkbox is selected the entire track will playback both inside the selected marker area and outside of the selected marker area. Once you've completed recording, simply press the "Stop" button (visual aid item #6). At anytime if you wish to cancel the recording process select the "Cancel" button which is located just below the stop button. If pressed, the current audio recorded will be discarded.

    Disk Space Available/Used

When viewing the record dialog box you'll notice the values for "Disk Spaced Used" and "Disk Space Available" (visual aid items #3 and #4). Normally, these values should not be of much concern to the user, especially in this day and age of ever increasing hard drive capacity. However, if the amount of available disk space is low as show in "Disk Space Available", the user will want to monitor how much audio is being recorded as to not run out of disk space.
